Garage Cabinets and Storage

By Francine L. Huff

Is your garage an obstacle course? If so, it's probably time to clean up the clutter and get organized. There are a variety of garage storage options available so there's probably a solution out there for your needs.

Customize Systems
Decide what you want to use your garage for before you purchase storage solutions. There are a variety of garage storage systems that come in different sizes and can be configured for your needs. You can buy a storage system from a home improvement store that includes shelving, cabinets, drawers, and hooks. Garage cabinets usually come in wood, steel, or resin. Shelving and hooks are useful for getting items off garage floors ? especially if they might get wet. If you store extra canned goods, paper items, or cleaning supplies in your garage, consider pantry style cabinets. Garment cabinets should be waterproof and airtight to keep out insects. If you have items of unusual sizes, consider adjustable shelving.

Maximize Wall Space
Wall mounted racks need to be secured with studs to make sure they can handle the weight of items you store on them. Ceiling or overhead mounted racks can be stationary or operate with a pulley system. Make sure you know what the maximum load is for these racks so you don't put too much weight on them.

Dream Workshop
Use tool boxes, cabinets, and chests to keep tools organized. Use toolboxes for smaller tools and larger tool chests that sit on top of a table or cabinet for larger tools. Pegboards are great for hanging tools, garden tools, mops, or brooms.

There is a garage storage system out there to help you get organized. Once you've cleared the clutter, donate remaining items to charity, or hold a garage sale.
