Fifteen Steps to Home Security
By Francine L. Huff
Protecting your family and home is always a priority. Law enforcement agencies reported an estimated 2.2 million burglaries in 2005 and the average monetary loss per incident was $1,725, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. That's why it's important to take steps to secure your home before something happens. Use the following guide to secure your home and keep your family safe.
- Keep doors and windows locked when you're not at home.
- Use heavy-duty, dead-bolt locks and heavy-duty, knob-in-lock sets on doors.
- Install a home security system on your windows and doors. Monitoring by a central station can help get a faster response from police and fire officials.
- Post stickers for your security system where they can be seen from outside.
- Have an escape plan in case of a home invasion, fire, or other emergency.
- Don't leave ladders, lawn mowers, or other tools out in the open.
- Trim bushes and trees that obstruct doors and windows so that burglars don't have a cover.
- Use wooden sticks or dowels as blocking devices in windows and sliding glass doors.
- Install adequate lighting in outdoor areas, especially around the front door.
- Use motion sensors to activate lighting. You can also use timers on outdoor lights.
- Get to know your neighbors and have them watch your home when you?re traveling.
- Cancel mail and newspaper delivery before going on vacation.
- Get solid core or metal doors.
- Keep your garage closed and your vehicles locked.
- Join or form a neighborhood watch group.
