Weighing the Options of Satellite Service
by John Tuthill
The Provider
In the US, there are two major satellite dish providers. Currently, the largest is DIRECTV, with over 16 million subscribers. The second company is Dish Network, which has around 12 million subscribers. Although there have been recent efforts to merge the two companies, they were rejected by the FCC, making a future merger very unlikely. These two services provide access to satellite TV in all of the 48 continental states, and modified programming options in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Both providers offer local programming options in most regions of the country.
The Hardware
The hardware of the system will include a satellite receiver box that connects to your TV, an outdoor satellite television antenna, and a remote control. Today's dishes are usually 18 inches across, and are often included in the package when you sign up for service.
The Extras
One option that has recently increased in popularity is the combination receiver/digital video recorder. By combining a digital video recorder with a satellite TV receiver, you will be able to pause, rewind, and fast-forward live satellite television. Many digital video recorder systems can be set up to work directly with your satellite service, so that recording and replaying programs is quick and painless. Additional options include parental controls, favorites lists, and interactive features.
