Pool Safety Tips
by Karen Lawson
When planning your inground pool, it's important to consider potential hazards associated with a swimming pool. Here are some suggestions for preventing them:
- Slip and fall accidents: Water accumulating around your pool can cause slip and fall accidents. Flip flops are notorious for skidding in water. A rough or pebbled texture surrounding your inground pool can provide traction and prevent slippery surfaces and puddles. Don't allow running in the pool area.
- Inground Pool drain hazard: Suction caused by inadequately uncovered pool drains has caused drownings and serious injury. Make sure that your pool drain meets required safety standards and caution swimmers to avoid the drain.
- Diving boards and slides: If you want to add these fun features to your swimming pool, make sure that anyone using the pool is instructed in their safe use. It's always important to look for swimmers below before diving or sliding, and only one person at a time should dive or slide. Roughhousing can cause accidents.
- Swimming Pool Maintenance: Maintaining your pool is essential to keeping it safe. Be sure to store chemicals out of reach of children and pets, as they are poisonous. Follow label directions carefully and dispose of empty containers only as instructed.
- Swimming Pool Security: Children and pets can run out the back door and fall or jump into your swimming pool. Protect kids and pets by fencing the pool area or otherwise securing it. Do not allow anyone to use your pool without permission and unless an adult is present.
- Sun exposure: It's easy to get sunburned in and around a swimming pool. Make sure there are shady areas near the pool for shelter; a covered patio or deck helps avoid sunburn and heat exposure. Encourage guests to use sunscreen, and keep a supply handy.
An inground pool provides enjoyment and can add to your home value. When planning for your swimming pool, take time to ensure that potential safety concerns are addressed.
