Get Rid of Rats for Good
by John Tuthill
The Risks of Rat Infestations
Rats are known carriers of many dangerous diseases, such as bubonic plague, hantavirus, murine typhus, salmonella, and leptospirosis. Rats also carry untold numbers of parasites that are involved in the transmission cycles of lyme disease and encephalitis. Besides deadly diseases, rats cause millions of dollars in damage to homes every year. With their strong jaws and unbreakable willpower, rats can chew through wood, plastic, and electric wires. There have been many instances of rats starting house fires by chewing through wires.
Chemical vs. Non-chemical Rat Control
Although chemical rat removal can be extremely swift and effective, there are many advantages to non-chemical methods. Non-chemical rat control is less dangerous to pets and children who could be accidentally exposed to the poison. Poisoned rats can die in walls and ceilings, causing a smelly and unhealthy hazard that can last for months. Dead rodents can be more of a nuisance than live ones.
When to Call a Professional
If you have unsuccessfully tried do-it-yourself rat control, it may be time to hire a professional exterminator. The exterminator can get rid of rats for good by eliminating your current rat population and sealing rats out of your home. Because rats can squeeze through the tiniest of spaces, make sure you hire an exterminator who will prevent rats from ever returning. Otherwise, it won't be long before rats re-colonize your home and you'll be calling the exterminator again.
