Interior and Exterior Painting Trends for Homes Today: Light, Calm, and Natural

by Joe Cooper

From primary colors to pleasant neutrals, current color trends for both the interiors and exteriors of homes suggest calmness over boldness and vintage over brand new. Read on for some current painting trends and what benefits they offer.

Using Color to be Warm and Bright
A few decades ago, primary colors and pastels dominated many of the palettes of homes across the country. In the last few years, we have seen greens, browns, and oranges pop up repeatedly in new and newly painted homes. Now, some housing experts report that primary colors are back in fashion.
Yellow. Traditionally an accent color, more homeowners are using yellow to set the tone for their interiors. Combining it with background paints like gray and white can produce a variety of looks, depending on the d?cor and furnishings, from country to contemporary.
Yellow is also easy on the eye, creating warmth and brightness, which are good feelings to create not only for day-to-day living, but for marketing your home as well.

Being Green with Grays and Golds Inside Your Home
Conserving the environment doesn't always mean using the color green; many interior painting choices have focused on simpler, "raw" hues like grays, light golds, tans, and browns. These are great background colors for d?cor and furnishings.
Making a home look natural and even vintage are some of the goals of these painting trends. Lighter greens, however, are currently a popular choice for exterior painting projects. "Avocado" or "sage" greens are among the most widely sought. These are fresh, light colors that wear well against the elements and mark a home as more contemporary than classic.

Keeping Things Natural Outside the Home
Exterior painting trends for residential homes are following some of these same patterns. Neutrals are among the most popular choices for their ease on the eye, their flexibility with styles, and their positive wear characteristics. Sun, rain, and winds do not fade natural paints as much as they do primary colors. They are also easier to touch up than darker paints.

While white has not made a strong comeback in exterior painting, off-whites and creams are very popular, along with yellow.
