Gutter Maintenance and Winter Storms
by Gabby Hyman
Even the best rain gutter and gutter guard system is fallible if you don't perform routine maintenance before and after harsh winter conditions. Following rough winter storms, you'll get the best performance and protection from your investment if you perform an all-around inspection, getting out the ladder and checking seamless rain gutters and guards. Gutter contractors and installation companies agree that preventative maintenance can extend the life of your system through the years.
Before the storms appear, it's a good idea to clean your rain gutters and remove fall leaves that can block drains and downspouts. After serious storms, you may need to call in a gutter contractor to remove limbs or deadfall that block the flow of your gutters, or to patch any damaged sections. If you have newly sagging sections or leaks, you can save money in the long term by having a gutter company come out and do simple repairs.
Inspect Your Rain Gutter and Guards
It's not a bad idea towatch the flow of water from your roof during a storm. That's when you'll see if your gutter installation was performed correctly and that the rain water is directed off the roof and away from your walls. You don't want it pooling around your home foundations.
If your gutters routinely clog with leaves, twigs, and dirt, and you don't already have gutter guards, you might consider calling out a contractor to install them. Covers that can easily be fitted and removed can extend the life of your home gutters and prevent potentially damaging blocks, sags, and warping. Remove muck with a power wash at least twice a year.
