Look at Experience Carefully When Hiring a Fence Contractor

by Allison E. Beatty

Building a fence is not as easy as it looks. It requires both carpentry skills and precision--and the strength to handle large amounts of heavy material. If you need help getting your fence project going, or would like someone else to handle it entirely, consider hiring a person with a little know-how and, especially, experience.

A contractor can help you to get the fence you want in the time you want, and within your allotted budget. Before busting out the yellow pages and dialing up the first number you find, however, make sure you conduct a little bit of research. Hiring the right contractor to handle your fence project can mean the difference between a beautiful, well-crafted yard enclosure and an unsightly, poorly crafted disaster.

Do Your Contractor Homework
The best place to start is by asking your friends, relatives, and neighbors for referrals. That way you can see a contractor's work firsthand and ask how he or she handled the job. Did the fencing contractor arrive on time and act in a professional manner? Was the worksite cleaned daily? Since fencing material is heavy and contains nails, it's important to keep it away from children.

After compiling a list of fence contractors, call and discuss the job over the phone before scheduling an estimate. A good fencing contractor should be willing to spend a few minutes talking about the types of fencing that they offer. Be wary of anyone who rushes off the phone and pushes for an estimate or a commitment on hiring.

You'll find that some contractors only install certain fencing materials--wood fencing versus vinyl fencing, for example. Some contractors also work only within a certain geographic area. When gathering estimates, look for a fencing contractor who takes the time to look around your property and make suggestions. There may be a better layout for the fence than the one you envisioned. There also may be issues with neighboring properties or utility easements. A reputable fencing contractor will look at the whole picture and then make suggestions.

Examining Work Firsthand
The most important part of evaluating a contractor is actually looking at his or her work. Look beyond mere pictures to actual fences that the company has installed. Keep an eye out for boards that are evenly spaced and without large gaps. Does the fence have any loose fitting boards or nails? Is the bottom of the fence an even height above the ground all the way around? Also look at how the fence gate is attached and how easily it opens and closes.

Building a quality fence requires a wide range of knowledge and skills. As you evaluate contractors, don't be afraid to ask questions and look closely at their work. This approach could save you plenty of aggravation as you move forward with the fencing project.
