Decks
Choose the Right Patio Materials for Elegant Outdoor Living

A patio or deck is an important adjunct to your home. But just as you chose your home's design, color, and location, so too should you choose the right patio materials to blend with your home's overall look and feel. The range of patio and deck materials is virtually endless, limited only by your taste and budget.
Patios and Decks: Overall Design
First, determine the placement, size, and design of your patio. Keep in mind your climate, drainage, shade, traffic flow, and other factors. You want your patio to be both functional and pleasing to the eye. While planning, determine the choice of materials based on your budget, weather conditions, and usage. If you get snow, you will want a smooth surface to allow shoveling or plowing.
Hardscape Materials
There are many different hardscape materials you can use for your patio. Plain concrete is perhaps the least expensive, but can be made very attractive through use of color, trim, and landscaping. Brick is popular, particularly for homes with a colonial design. Pavers come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures. Stone, slate, marble, or tile are more expensive but can give stunning results. Stone veneer gives the benefits of real stone, but with less expense.
Decks
You may prefer a deck to a hardscape patio. Decks, particularly natural wood decks, require more periodic maintenance, particularly in areas which experience weather extremes. Redwood and teak are the most popular decking woods, but hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and cedar are also widely used. To eliminate the need for maintenance, you can choose a wood-look composite material such at Trex, EON, ChoiceDek, WeatherBest or Epoch Evergrain.
Use an Expert
If you have experience with large home projects, you may be ready to tackle a deck or patio yourself. If not, hire a licensed contractor who will ensure that the job is done right. Get references and check with the Better Business Bureau and state contractors' board.
