Choose the Right Accessories to Make the Most of Your Wood Deck
by Brett Freeman
Decks have evolved from a place to keep the grill and maybe a few chairs to the equivalent of an outdoor living room. And just like your other living room, the way you outfit the space can go a long way towards determining how much you enjoy it. Here are four accessories that can make it easier to enjoy your deck.
Built-in Deck Storage Benches
Adding storage benches along your wood deck's railing can reduce or eliminate the amount of stuff you need to haul outside--and then back inside--every time you use the deck. These benches can hold pool and water toys for your kids, grilling utensils, and even the plastic plates, tumblers and wine glasses for when you're cooking and drinking out. And you'll certainly never regret having additional places to sit.
LED Accent Lighting Strips
Spotlights are great at lighting up the entire deck--and attracting bugs. Spotlights can also be overkill if you're just trying to enjoy a mellow evening outside. LED lighting strips installed under deck railings and along stairs and walkways provide enough light so that you can see what you're doing and where you're going, but without the glare. Or the bugs.
Retractable Awnings
The early versions of retractable awnings were prohibitively expensive, but as they have grown in popularity, the price has come down. Awnings can greatly increase the amount and quality of time you spend on your wood deck by providing cooling shade on particularly hot days, and shelter during summer showers.
Chimineas
Another accessory that can increase your deck season is the chiminea. These outdoor fireplaces can provide ambiance on summer evenings, and warmth during the rest of the year. They're also much cooler for toasting marshmallows than a gas grill.
