Build the Deck You've Always Wanted

by Mary Butler

For the Best Deck Design, Create a Checklist
Once you've decided to build a new deck, you can't help but want to start enjoying it as soon as possible. But hold onto your hammer for a moment. You won't regret taking time to carefully craft a deck design that will best suit your needs today and for years to come. Size is one of the most important considerations in deck design. You may be limited by space or budget or both, which will help narrow your choices. No matter what your situation, you'll want to think about how many people will typically use the deck and how they will use it. A family of four to six will require a deck of at least 150 square feet; calculate about 25 square feet per person. If you hope to accommodate more than just an eating space, you'll need to bump up the square footage to fit a barbeque, garden containers, or maybe a play area for your kids.

Unify Your Yard and New Deck
Think of your new deck as more than just a space for entertaining and relaxing. It's an opportunity to create a unifying bridge between your home and yard. Design your new deck to compensate for trouble spots in your yard, especially if it dramatically slopes or has any damp or shady areas where grass or plants won't grow.

Location, Location, Location
The location of your new deck will help make it a great place to spend time. The northern side of the house, where it will benefit from winter sun, is an ideal site. While you want your new deck to be nice and sunny, you also want to provide respite from the sun by locating it near shade or by building a shade structure. Build your deck in the most advantageous spot for getting in and out of your house easily, and if you can, install the deck where it captures the best garden views. Your deck design should account for your proximity to neighbors. If you want your new deck a comfortable extension of your home, you should be able to relax the same way you do in your kitchen or living room--with privacy.
