Use Curb Appeal to Make Your House a Standout
by Allison E. Beatty
As you walk around your block, does your house pale in comparison to other homes? Do you notice chipping paint, untrimmed bushes, and worn front steps? With a little work, you can go a long way in creating curb appeal and boosting your home's standing on the block.
The outside of your house creates the first impression for neighbors and visitors. If your home needs a facelift, start by assessing the situation and looking for the best ways to add curb appeal and make a big impact. If you have major repairs to do, start there. A broken window or missing section of siding can create an eyesore that affects how people view your home. Next, move onto minor repairs, such as a broken step or missing railing.
Paint Your Way to Curb Appeal
One important project to consider when creating curb appeal is painting. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for a home and create an instant "wow" factor for anyone walking by. Look for crisp, clean colors that provide a nice accent for your home's style and architectural details. Consider painting your trim and doors in a contrasting color to further enhance its look.
Creating Curb Appeal in the Yard
Landscaping is another key to making your home stand out. If your grass needs to be revitalized, considering starting a fertilizer and weed control program. This can take time, but you should see results within three to six months.
Next, examine your landscaping for areas that need to be trimmed or replaced. If your bushes are overgrown, they may be blocking a view of an interesting front porch or bank of windows. Also consider adding curved flowerbeds along your porch, front door, or sidewalk to enhance the view. By trimming, weeding, and replacing some of your landscaping, you can add curb appeal rather quickly.
Curb appeal is an important element of any home. By paying attention to what other people see as they walk by--and working to correct any unsightly areas--you can add curb appeal and a sense of satisfaction in your surroundings.
